Roosevelt Corollary to the Monroe Doctrine Roosevelt starts off by saying that it is pointless for the U.S. to take positions regarding freedom when it does not have the army and navy to back it up. He says that peace which goes on while tyrants and oppressors run amuck is just as bad as war and injustice to a nation is similar to injustice to an individual in that it must be stopped. Due to a lack of international tribunals who would punish oppressors, the U.S. as a nation should seek to help oppressed nations and needs a big army to do it. He claims that the U.S. is not land hungry and their only interest in the other nations in the western hemisphere is their welfare. If the success of the Platt Ammendment in Cuba could be replicated in other countries then the US should do it.
This is significant because it provides justification for American imperialism in the future. Roosevelt greatly flaunts the glory and necessity of the big stick in this document. The Corollary separates the US from other nations. The US is not an oppressor, but merely doing it's duty as a free nation to seek freedom for others particularly in it's own hemisphere. Eric L. |
William McKinley
The main idea of this primary source is about President William McKinley and his biography. The source describes even details only people close to McKinley would know. For example, the president was not only know as McKinley, he had a nickname which was "Idol of Ohio". We can also assume that he was a prestigeous and well educated man since he went to Allegheny College. Before becoming the president of the United States, McKinley was also known as a lawyer. As a republican, for a long time he was known as a mediocre president.
In this source there is no speaker, but it is talking about the life of former president William McKinley. The Occasion is just the lifetime of McKinley and highlighting his key moments in life. The audience is whoever would like to know the biography of president McKinley. Its main purpose is for others to know McKinley's life story. The main subject is essentially William McKinley and his life. The tone is straightforward about McKinley and his live story.

Woman's Suffrage
The main idea of my primary source is about Woman's Suffrage. This is an excerpt form a diary of a National Woman's Party (NWP) member (Rose Winslow), while she is in prison. The Source describes her experience in prison due to her participation in the hunger strike. She also describes the horrible atrocities that the prison guards allowed to happen. the audience for this source would be anyone who was an advocate for womans suffage, of any person on the street at that time because no one truly knew what type of things were happening.
